Beyond Crisis™ : What Should Social Workers Know Before Referring a Couple Impacted by Sexual Trauma?

  • Jul 26
  • 4 min read

When supporting survivors of sexual abuse or sexual assault, social workers often play an important role in helping clients access appropriate care.

Sometimes, that support includes recognizing when the impact of trauma extends beyond the individual and is affecting the relationship.

A question that may arise is:

When might a couple benefit from specialized couples counselling after sexual trauma?

Understanding the role of specialized relationship support can help Social Workers make informed referrals while continuing to support their clients.

Sexual Trauma Can Affect the Relationship System

Sexual trauma does not happen in isolation.

It can influence how a survivor experiences:

  • trust;

  • emotional closeness;

  • vulnerability;

  • communication;

  • physical intimacy;

  • conflict.

Partners may also be affected as they try to understand what has changed and how to provide support.

A couple may still have care, commitment, and love for one another while struggling with the impact trauma has had on their relationship.

Signs a Couple May Benefit From Specialized Support

Couples counselling may be helpful when partners are experiencing:

  • repeated communication breakdowns;

  • difficulty understanding each other’s responses;

  • challenges navigating boundaries;

  • changes in intimacy;

  • increased conflict or emotional distance;

  • uncertainty about how to support one another.

These challenges do not necessarily mean the relationship is unhealthy or failing.

They may reflect the ways trauma has affected connection and safety.

Questions Social Workers May Consider When Making Referrals

When considering whether specialized couples counselling may be appropriate, professionals may explore:

  • Is sexual trauma affecting how the couple communicates or connects?

  • Are both partners struggling to understand the impact of the sexual trauma?

  • Are relationship patterns becoming a source of additional distress?

  • Would support focused on the relationship dynamic be beneficial?

A referral does not mean the Social Worker is stepping away from the client’s care.

It can mean recognizing when another area of support may be helpful.

What Specialized Couples Counselling Offers

Couples impacted by sexual trauma often need more than general relationship support.

Specialized counselling can help couples explore:

  • how trauma has affected their relationship;

  • how to communicate needs safely;

  • how to rebuild trust;

  • how to create emotional and relational safety;

  • how to reconnect while respecting boundaries.

A Therapist with experience in sexual trauma and couples work understands that both the individual experience of trauma and the relationship dynamic require attention.

Supporting Couples Through Collaboration

Social workers are often an important part of a survivor’s support system.

Collaboration between professionals can help ensure couples receive care that is responsive to the complexity of sexual trauma.

Some couples benefit from working with a therapist who specifically understands how sexual trauma can impact attachment, communication, and connection.
